Radioactive Waste and Decommissioning

Most of the radioactive waste generated in Spain, which are very low to low-level and intermediate- level radioactive waste are managed in a centralized repository located in El Cabril –Córdoba-, managed by the Spanish National Radioactive Waste Company ENRESA. Radioactive waste is typically generated in hospitals, research centres and nuclear power plants.

Proper management of this waste starts by knowing which level of radioactivity and isotopes they have, so if their activity is below certain thresholds, declassification it’s possible.  Otherwise, they must be managed by ENRESA.

In our laboratory we have experience performing radiological waste characterization on diverse material, such as steel dust, radioactive soil, waste materials from decommissioning activities, mining activities and ion exchange resins.
